Essential Servants Will Be Safe – Senzo Mchunu

Government services are not going to come to a complete standstill during the nationwide lockdown over Covid-19 announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday.

This was the message from Public Service and Administration Minister Senzo Mchunu,  adding that the essential services public servants who will be working during this period will be doing so under a safe environment to ensure that they don’t become infected.

Mchunu said director-general and heads of department had to publish the list of workers who are essential and ensure they are safe from contracting the virus.

“There has to be continuing rendering of those services that are regarded as essential and critical,” he said, briefing the media.

Cases of people who have tested positive for the global pandemic have reached 709. This represented a jump from 554 cases yesterday.

Mchunu assured all public servants who will be working that their safety was guaranteed.

“I am well aware and conscious of the fact that public servants are very anxious about this difficult situation facing us. We are in a different terrain; we are in a state of war to contain the spread of the pandemic and if it is not contained it will also devastate the Public Service,” he said.
