Police close to arresting man spreading fake COVID-19 news

The police are hot on the heels of a Cape Town man who posted a video claiming test kits for Coronavirus are contaminated.

His claims come after it was announced that the country was about to embark on a nationwide testing campaign where thousands of community workers will be dispatched to test citizens at their homes.

National Police Spokesman, Vish Naidoo, said police are working on the matter and will be advising the country about its conclusion.

He could be neither confirm nor deny where the case had been registered against the man, who is to be charged for spreading fake news under the new lockdown regulations.

The man, who cannot he named for legal reasons, posted a video urging South Africans to refuse to be tested using these test kits – but the information hold no truth.

In the video, which has since gone viral on social media, the man claims that government are planning to send 10 000 community workers with the police to force citizens to do the tests.

“Do not under any circumstances allow them to test you. There’s a possibility that the swabs are contaminated with COVID-19.” He further claims the swabs were used globally to spread the virus, however, he didn’t indicate which evidence he was relying on to support his claims. The man had also linked the COVID-19 virus to 5G which has now become a topic amongst many social media users.

Some conspiracy theorist believe the Coronavirus was introduced to side track people from a mass roll out of the new speed enabled network worldwide.

He has since been condemned by the department of health in the Eastern Cape who said that he was creating unnecessary panic among citizens.
