Transnet provides its properties to the homeless

State-owned logistics firm Transnet on Monday joined Eskom in providing some of its facilities to the government for quarantine activities.

Nompumelelo Kunene, Transnet spokesperson said as part of the company’s efforts to contain and minimise the spread of COVID-19 – the company had designated properties across three provinces to be used as quarantine sites and shelters for the homeless during the 21-day lockdown period.

“Transnet in partnership with the local governments in the provinces of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State will support the efforts to implement the national lockdown across the country,” Kunene said.


“In Gauteng, Transnet has made available, Esselen Park School of Rail Campus and Parkhill Lodge properties and facilities as quarantine sites. In KwaZulu-Natal, No.60 Mayors Road in Pietermaritzburg (Msunduzi Municipality) will also be used to provide shelter for the homeless and has been available as of 27 March until 17 April 2020.”

Kunene added that a student lodge in Bloemfontein, in the Free State province is currently being utilised to accommodate homeless people for the duration of the lockdown.

The three properties have the capacity to host more than 600 people.

Eskom said on Saturday that it has handed its Academy of Learning centre in Midrand, Johannesburg, over to government to be used as a quarantine site.

The facility has 416 beds and other facilities.
