Pitso heads north to awaken sleeping giant Al-Ahli Saudi

In a surprise move, South African-born football coach Pitso Mosimane has been appointed as the new head coach of Al-Ahli Saudi.

Mosimane confirmed the news on his Twitter account after the Saudi Arabian second tier side made the announcement on Sunday.

With Mosimane’s rich resume following a stint at Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he won trophies, expectations are high from Al-Ahli Saudi fans that the team’s performance will improve following their relegation, for the first time in history, last season.

“Let’s awaken the sleeping giant and [bring] the people back to fill the stadium. Very big task but exciting too,” tweeted Mosimane.

“I am very excited for this opportunity and I can’t wait to meet my new team Al-Ahli Saudi Football Club. Shukran to the chairman, CEO, board, players, & supporters for trusting us with this mission. We will do our best, recreate history & make the green nation happy.”

Making up Mosimane’s technical team at Al-Ahli Saudi will be Kabelo Rangoaga, the club’s fitness trainer, and performance analyst Musi Matlaba. Rangoaga and Matlaba previously worked with Mosimane at Mamelodi Sundowns.
