‘A government of national U-turn’ says poet Mzakhwe Mbuli

Legendary poet Mzwakhe Mbuli has taken a stand and voiced his thoughts about the government of national unity (GNU).

Mbuli is speaking against the newly formed GNU, which was formed after the general elections in May. However, when approached for an interview this week, Mbuli declined to comment further on the song, stating that it speaks for itself.

In the three-minute-and-27-second song, dedicated to the ANC, Mbuli calls the organisation directionless and uncertain.

National U-turn against the people

He says it is the government of the national U-turn against the people, and it is an unjustifiable marriage.

The veteran poet says the GNU is the “manifest of promises broken, voters misled, and voters undermined”.

He adds that it is the government of “national untruths, the historical mission dumped, the revolution betrayed, people politically blindfolded, hypnotised and the people’s intelligence undermined”.

The song also features the Soweto String Quartet, who are heard in the low humming of the national anthem at the back.

The activist poet adds that under the new government, there is no unforeseeable future, no mandate, no referendum, and no vision.

Disconnected themselves from the masses

“Leaders have disconnected themselves from the masses, leaders have disqualified themselves from reality. Behold prepaid leaders, behold sugar-coated poison.

He adds that he hopes that the dead can rise and see what their efforts have led to.

President Cyril Ramaphosa officially began his second term last week after the ANC formulated the GNU. It incorporated its rival, the Democratic Alliance.

The parties, together with 10 other smaller parties that also form the GNU, are currently locked in meetings to decide on ministerial positions and cabinet positioning.

The song comes as the DA in Gauteng has warned that it would pull out of the provincial government of unity. Their reason is if Premier Panyaza Lesufi unilaterally proceeded to announce his cabinet without their blessings.

DA outburst over ministerial positions

The outburst from the DA was after talk that Lesufi was planning to announce members of his executive council. In it, only three portfolios would be allocated to the DA.

The DA is asking for 12 ministerial positions. These include those that Gwede Mantashe and Dr Aaron Motsoaledi held in the sixth administration. They were two of the ANC’s top officials,

The former official opposition party wants to control the two ministries. These are the  Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy.
