DJ search competition addresses imbalances in music industry

The second edition of the Shaya Ingoma DJ Search is back for all the aspiring female DJs to spin the decks.

Spearheaded by Smirnoff 1818, the competition aims to balance the gender composition in the the industry.

Brand manager at Diageo Nombulelo September said: “Many more female DJs are still needed across the country to address the imbalance when it comes to access to paying gigs and opportunities within this career for women compared to their male counterparts.

“Through Smirnoff 1818, the Shaya Ingoma Top 10 female DJ Search aims to narrow the gender gap and shine a light on some talented next generation female DJs.”

September said the DJs have until December 3 to enter for the competition. The top 10 finalists will be selected to compete for the 2022 title. The first winner of competition, Rosetta D33P, said winning the title opened many doors for her.

“As a result of me winning the Smirnoff 1818 Shaya Ingoma Top 10 Female DJ Search in 2021, I could take advantage of so many opportunities that opened doors in my career including being first option as a DJ at Smirnoff’s 2022 events, a three-month residency on a national radio station, and a trip to the Ibiza.”

The panel of judges dominates with females and consists of DJ “Pruluv” Prudence Mathebula from Metro FM, DJ Slender “The Dancing DJ” from KwaZulu-Natal, and renowned producer and legend in the music industry DJ Oskido Mdlongwa.

To enter for the competition, one must record a video playing a three-minute track made from a set of six songs. Each track should be no longer than 30 seconds. The video can be uploaded on social media platforms of their choice using #ShayIngoma1818.
