The annual Royal Gardens Festival, which celebrates the rich cultural heritage and promotes tourism in Limpopo, is making a comeback after a four-year hiatus.
The festival first took place in 2012 with a capacity of only 6 000 attendees. The attendance has since skyrocketed to 26 000 in 2019.
Speaking to Sunday World this week, chairman of Royal Gardens Festival Shandukani Nesengani said he is excited about the comeback of the event.
“Public outcry has made us make a comeback because the event is the biggest of its kind in the province. It takes place in a village, not in an urban area, so it also creates economic development towards the community,” said Nesengani.
Nesengani spoke highly of the production of the event, saying the organisers are proud of the event. He added that the line-up for this year’s edition will be announced on August 1, saying festival goers should look out for a surprise act.
“The festival is a way to show that Venda is not what people think it is. It shows that it is developed and a very beautiful part of the country, it is more of a cultural exchange than just dancing,” said Nesengani.
“People will not only experience Venda people but Tsonga and Pedi people, basically we will be giving people the best of Limpopo.”
The festival is billed to take place on September 16 at Nandoni Dam in partnership with Phalaphala FM and SABC2.
