Award-winning jazz singer and trumpeter Mandisi Dyantyis believes his two shows at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg will be “a glorious mess”.
One of the shows is sold-out already, and Dyantyis has confirmed that he will be performing alongside his newly formed 18-piece jazz orchestra.
Fans love live music shows
Speaking to Sunday World on Monday, the Mabaphile singer said the shows over two days are a result of huge demand for his live performances.
Johannesburg has a culture of attending live music shows, he said, noting that the people in the City of Gold are used to great shows.
“It is because of the demand from the audience and because we know what happened the last time we were at Emperors Palace, we had to counter-act,” Dyantyis said.
“The demand is something we cannot take for granted because Joburg people are used to great music treats.
“We did the 12-20 piece orchestra and people were mesmerised because I think people think they have heard the music enough, but now they will hear it in a way that they have never heard it before.”
He added that he attributes the success of his shows to his fans.
“I do think about the way the people who listen to my music show support for me through these shows, and I have to attribute this to them.
“Another thing is we tend to sound better live than we sound in recording, we work hard on our live performances.”
Debunk the myth
Dyantyis said he and his group are debunking the myth that jazz is only appealing to old people.
“My audiences are a mixture of young and old, because we cannot box people. I always say that people will gravitate towards good music.
“My music speaks about the everyday happenings and I think that is important. The secret is that I do not try to create things outside of who I am, I always create things solely from the person that I am.”
The highly anticipated performances are scheduled for November 11 and 12 at 6pm.
