Loan shark funds Makhadzi’s BET awards business-class tickets

South African music sensation and dancer Ndivhudzannyi Ralivhona, fondly known as Makhadzi, has spoken up about her financial difficulties.

The Limpopo-born star, who recently won the BET Viewers Choice: Best International Act award, told the Podcast and Chill team that she borrowed money from a mashonisa (loan shark) in order to afford plane tickets to Los Angeles, Carlifonia.

Her birthday fell on the same day as her win, making it even more significant.

After her victory, the Zwivhuya hitmaker revealed that she is going through a lot and that she owes the South African Revenue Service (SARS).

“It is not a secret, I was in the newspapers whatever, I think, last year somewhere. I don’t know who sold me out because I feel like these SARS things—it’s like someone goes to spice you to tarnish you,” she said.

She further revealed that all the money she gets monthly, goes towards paying her debt.

“So, I end up not having money for myself. For me to come here I had to go to mashonisa to get a get a loan  because this month end, no matter if there is a BET, I have to pay. I had to borrow money to afford business class because besides everything, I must be the superstar that I am.”

The singer said she believes in herself and her career; hence, she went through the mashonisa process and attended the awards show.

In December 2023, Sunday World reported that the award-winning songbird’s multi-million rand tax bill has been drastically reduced by a whopping 60%, hardly a month after she unleashed tax consultants on the South African Revenue Services (Sars) to challenge the taxman.

The Matorokisi hitmaker was slapped with a staggering R6.6 million tax bill by SARS early in 2023.

In the same year, she and her production company Open Mic were also dragged to the Pretoria High Court in a R8.2-million lawsuit for a failed sneaker deal with brand Kicks Kokovha.

Kicks Sportswear, the company producing the Kicks Kokovha sneakers, argued that Makhadzi and her company breached the terms and conditions of their partnership agreement, stipulating that the songstress has to perform wearing the brand’s sneakers and promote the brand on her social media platforms.

    • Well, it’s sad what she’s going through. But I doubt so many journalists from different outlets will risk their reputation like that. Fans will always protect their star.

  1. When you get money, whether you are a singer, dancer, or sort of a so-called star, make sure that at least HALF is put aside for the Devil SARS before showing off with a new expensive car or alcohol.
