PR company drops Burna Boy like a hot potato

Award-winning publicity company Khanya PR has cut ties with internationally acclaimed muso Burna Boy hours after he postponed his South African concert.

On Tuesday, the Nigerian superstar announced that he was postponing his South African concert scheduled for September 23 to December 16.

In a statement released hours after Burna Boy’s announcement, Khanya PR revealed that it will be removing itself from being his official publicists for the concert.

“We hereby wish to announce that Khanya PR and Media Solutions has, after much consideration, resolved to resign the account for the Burna Boy concert …” the agency said.

It did not reveal reasons for severing ties with the star but stated that it came to the decision after consultations with its lawyers.

“We have, as an agency, elected to withdraw our services which have up to now included PR and social media management. We have, following consideration of our business interests and working through the necessary legal advice, come to the conclusion that it is in the best interest of all parties concerned that we cease our role in the event.

“We wish the organisers well in their efforts and journey towards the concert and their future projects,” the agency said.

In a statement released through social media, Burna Boys’ team said they postponed the event to December 16 because of low ticket sales and logistic matters.

Burna Boy was set to perform at FNB stadium as part of his Africa Tour.

According to a source, who is part of the concert-planning committee, Burna Boy fired the sound team. The source said they were forced to cancel this weekend’s event because there were problems with sound at the last minute.

“They had a problem with the company that offers them sound which is the biggest sound company in Africa. Burna Boy fired them on Monday night and they had to replace them with another company from North West, which does not have the required capacity to do the show,” the source said.
