Local musician, Simphiwe Dana, is the latest celebrity who has come under fire for insulting SA men. She unapologetically says that Mzansi’s men are “gold diggers”.
In a tweet yesterday, Dana said South African men are gold diggers and they even dig for maintenance money.
“They ask for Uber. You buy them airtime. You pay for the rent. They’re driving your car. Using your bank card. And you’re paying all the bills. Shameless. Still have the audacity to go out there and say they’re taking care of you. That you a gold digger. They’re not paying maintenance,” reads another post.
As tweeps attacked her for her generalisation, she did not back down but instead hit back at anyone who opposed her views.
She told a user, who alleged that Dana has only met opportunists, that he shouldn’t be happy that his gender were opportunists.
Driving School dropOut said the musician was being a disrespectful child.
But she came out guns blazing and said: “I just love how SA men, with their short ugly selves, have such audacity. I’m probably older than this one. But he feels privileged enough to call me a kid.”
Actor Hlomla Dandala also weighed in and asked the singer not to generalise.
“I’m a South African man. When you say ‘South African men are …’ you include me. As I would inadvertently be including you if I said ‘South African women are…’ Freedom of speech still requires us to be responsible for the word we speak and the people affected by them.”
Asked to apologise to nation, she responded: “I think not”.
