Award-winning actress Nambitha Ben-Mazwi will star in the lead role of Showmax’s upcoming Empini alongside seasoned actor Siyabonga Thwala.
Empini is set in the dangerous world of the private VIP security industry.
Ben-Mazwi is cast as Ndoni Themba, a deeply troubled private security bodyguard in search of answers, while Thwala will portray her mentor, Khaya Bhodoza, a prominent businessman and political stalwart.
Speaking on her role in the drama series, Ben-Mazwi said she believes that she manifested herself by playing the character she will portray.
High-paced action drama
“My team and I have been working on a strategy for the past two years on branching into a role that showcases my skills as an actress who can also perform in a high-paced action drama,” she said.
“As a strategist, I’ve been meticulous in my career and how I avoid playing the same character twice.
“The time is now to showcase the range I possess in my acting.”
She added that the role has been the most physically demanding she has ever played, although she has had a similar role in the past.
Strength training
“I also did Muay Thai fighting for two years, so when I got this role, I was excited because I could now use my skill as a Muay Thai fighter.
“I am generally an active person, but for this role, I have had to also up my training, change my diet, and do more strength training to ensure that I fully immerse myself in this character.”
In 2023, Ben-Mazwi celebrated reaching a seven-year milestone in the entertainment industry.
She said she left her corporate job that she had worked hard to secure simply because she wanted to be a full-time storyteller.
Empini will start streaming on Showmax on May 23, with two new episodes introduced every week.
