Johannesburg – We caught up with entertainment figure, Afro Pop star of Bongo Muffin, Speedy, to chat about his latest single Khumbula, featuring Nhlanhla, which was released late last month.
A colourful entertainer relevant decades later to all Afro-pop lovers is amazing with Nciza
So have you separated from Bongo Maffin and was it because of the Towel?
No I have not separated from Bongo Maffin. I’ll be juggling both my solo career and being a part of the group, they gave me their blessings when I started working on my upcoming album (The Gift) which is out in a few months.
What’s the song about as you look very excited?
Khumbula speaks about remembering loved ones back home and looking forward to visiting them again. It’s a midtempo track with a catchy hook and Afropop flavour leaving you with a nostalgic feeling of the sound pioneered by Bongo Muffin. I’ve heard it and it’s smooth and soothing.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In 5 years I see myself still doing what I’ve been doing for the past 25 years when I started, maintaining my brand and creating more opportunities for myself, I now have my own label (THE GIFT MUSIC) in partnership with Kalawa and Universal music.
Who will relate to this beautiful track?
The track resonates with anyone that’s been away from their loved ones Long distance relationship. A husband working in the mines. A long-distance truck driver who only sees his family once in a while.
How long have you been working on this song?
We’ve been working on Khumbula for about a month to get it to what we wanted it to sound like and we even brought it, live musicians, to play as well.
When you are not in studio what do you get up to?
When I’m not doing music I travel it’s relaxing
So are you and Jub Jub really not cousins?
Me and Jub Jub are not cousins People just assumed that because we used to look alike back then But NO!!! we’re not related whatsoever.
What inspired this song?
The song was inspired by the fact that apart from the message it carries, I felt that people appreciate seeing more collaborations and Nhlanhla are members of two iconic groups our continent has seen so far. I felt it was refreshing.
Who is your favourite artist locally.
My favorite local artist is Ringo Madlingozi
