Health minister Zweli Mkhize announced that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases have escalated to 1380 during a live briefing on Wednesday.
In his announcement made on Wednesday, Mkhize said he ascribes the reduction in the rate of infections due to closing of boarders, enforcing quarantine on inbound travellers and lockdown restrictions.
But he also warned that the virus has no boundaries and that it can have another wave of rapid infections as seen in other countries, like China.
Gauteng remains the epicentre with 645 confirmed cases. The Northern Cape has the lowest number of positive Covid-19 cases, with a total of seven.
He said there were 44 202 tests done nationwide in private laboratories, but the total number of tests were 47 541, which include tests that have been repeated.
He said over 6000 tests were done at public laboratories of South Africa.
“This for us is way too few for the size of population, inequality, poverty and burden of diseases and immune suppression that we have. Even though this number seems high, I’m saying it’s still far too low for the challenges South Africa faces,” he said.
