Johannesburg – What was meant to be a historic day of goodwill and giving at the Soweto Youth Golf Day at Soweto Country Club has been cancelled due to riots and protests outside the Soweto Country Club.
Bricks, burning tyres, and raging community members fill Mokoka Street in Pimville blocking the entryway to entering the golf club.
Celebrities T-bo Touch, Thomas Mlambo, Andile Ncube, OG Molefe, Stanton Fredericks, and Lira were set to join TT Mbha in commemorating 45 years of the Soweto Uprising through a charitable golf day.
“It is with great disappointment that we have to pull the plug on such a well-organised day of commemoration. We have sponsors, individuals, and media who invested their time, resources, and money in the golf day. But we value people’s lives and cannot put anyone at risk. Luckily, blankets and non-perishable foods were distributed on Monday 14 June 2021 to six NPO’s in Pimville, Kliptown, and Klipspruit,” TT says.
The Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu was set to make an appearance at this prestigious gathering and to give her support to the community members who would be employed on this day.
“This project was meant to create employment for the staff of the golf club, the young golfers from Soweto to be able to meet their mentors, and we had created employment for 72 caddies and 10 photographers who were going to be used on the day,” TT says.
“This is heart-breaking. Not to dismiss the needs of the protestors but, we are truly and deeply saddened by this because it was intended to help build the economy of the township,” TT adds.
