Tourism is a powerful catalyst for economic growth

Tourism Month is an essential celebration that not only promotes domestic travel but also showcases our country’s rich and diverse tourism offerings, underscoring the vital role this sector plays in driving economic growth and community development.

By participating in Tourism Month, we can foster a greater appreciation for our local attractions and support jobs in our communities, ultimately benefiting everyone.

The month also allows us to showcase the spectacular tourist attractions that our beautiful province has to offer.

Increased tourism also fosters international connections, enhancing a country’s global profile while encouraging trade and investment.

Improved relationships can lead to collaboration in various sectors, further bolstering economic prospects.

The economic spin-offs of tourism are extensive, affecting multiple facets of a region’s economy. By investing in this sector, regions not only stimulate growth and create jobs but also enhance cultural and environmental stewardship.

As the world continues to recover from the impacts of global disruptions such as COVID-19 and wars, tourism can play a pivotal role in shaping resilient economies for the future.

Tourism is a powerful engine for economic growth, with wide-ranging benefits that extend beyond direct spending by visitors.

The sector is one of the 10 high-priority growth sectors in Gauteng, for example.

The province accounts for more than 44% (3.9 million) of international arrivals into the country and generates more than R42 billion annually in terms of foreign tourism revenue and just over R18 billion in domestic spend, making it a lead player in the sector.

Tourism also contributes just under 4% towards Gauteng’s GDP, and it accounts for more than 800 000 formal jobs and a million more in the visitor economy value chain.
