Acclaimed DJ Maphorisa assault case postponed to July 26

A case of assault against Mnike hitmaker and award-winning producer Maphorisa was once again postponed at the Randburg magistrate’s court on Wednesday.

The deejay, born Sonnyboy Sekowe, returns to court on July 26.

In his next appearance, he is expected to hear the decision of the senior public prosecutor on his representation which he submitted to court.

Clad in black puffer jacket and cyan hat, Maphorisa, who is also known as Phori, appeared calm. He was accompanied by his lawyer and friends.

The star was arrested and held overnight at the Sandton police station in May after he allegedly assaulted his actress girlfriend Thuli Phongolo during an argument.

Phongolo told the court at his first appearance that she wished to withdraw the statement she deposed at the police station when she opened the case.

In the statement, Phongolo told the police that she had an argument with the Ba Straata hitmaker after she confronted him about an argument at a gig the previous night.

The actress said: “I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig,” said Phongolo.

The actress alleged that the DJ slapped her, choked her and dragged her to the balcony of her Sandton apartment.

Maphorisa is out on R4 000 bail.
