Singer and song writer Makhosazana Princess Masango, popularly known as Azana, has shared how award-winning songbird Lira became her role model and inspiration.
Azana, who is also a distinguished performer, has released a soulful and spiritual project titled Kwa Khanya. The album was done with producer Samukelo Mavuso, popularly known as Sam Deep.
Speaking to Sunday World, Azana said growing up she used to have short hair. This was because her parents thought if she had big hair, it would attract boys. They thought older boys would take advantage of her because of her height.
“It always made me so sad. But when I saw someone who looked like me on television, I was automatically drawn to her. Someone who was being celebrated for her music, something that I love too. I could relate to her,” said Azana.
Lira’s musical talent and short hair made it relatable
“I was drawn to her because of how she looks and her production. We can all agree that Lira and her team have put together one of the best live concerts to ever come out of South Africa. Growing up, I really loved her confidence on stage. She was one of the performers who made me stand next to the television and copy what she was doing.”
Speaking about her new project, Azana describes it as one that represents merging two different worlds. That of spirituality and religion. Healing individuals facing obstacles in their daily lives.
New album is a different body of work
“Kwa Khanya is a body of work touching on topics such as the creation of Earth, African beliefs, the drive to survive and succeed. Also various experiences in love. Collaborating with Sam Deep was amazing. We both aimed to tell our story, his through instruments and mine through voice and lyrics.”
Sam Deep said his project with Azana is something South Africans did not know they needed.
“We hope our people enjoy it as much as we did creating it. And we look forward to seeing them sing it back to us on the road,” expressed Sam Deep.
