Court postpones Maphorisa assault case to next week

A case of assault against Mnike hitmaker and award-winning producer Maphorisa was postponed to next week at the Randburg magistrate’s court.

The deejay, real name Sonnyboy Sekowe, made a brief court appearance on Wednesday and the matter was postponed to July 12.

Maphorisa, who is also known as Phori, was arrested and held overnight at the Sandton police station in May after he allegedly assaulted his actress girlfriend Thuli Phongolo during an argument.

The matter was postponed for the star to make representations to have the case withdrawn. This after Phongolo told the court at his first appearance that she wished to withdraw the statement she deposed at the police station.

In a statement, Phongolo said she had an argument with the Ba Straata hitmaker after she confronted him about an argument at a gig the previous night.

The actress said at the time: “I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig.”

The actress, who was accompanied by her road manager when she opened the case, said Maphorisa responded aggressively and started slapping her.

“He held me, took me to the balcony and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” she said.

Maphorisa is out on R4 000 bail.
