SABC bosses and ‘7de Laan’ producers agree that show goes on

The SABC and struggling Afrikaans soapie 7de Laan have kissed and made up.

Thousands of 7de Laan fans will be relieved to know that the soapie, which concludes in December, will continue production.

This after it was announced on Monday that filming of 7de Laan had stopped due to financial disagreements with the SABC bosses.

Danie Odendaal Productions initially said it had suspended production of 7de Laan with immediate effect.

The announcement that 7de Laan staff should not return to work was made to the cast and crew members on Sunday morning, allegedly via WhatsApp.

However, on Wednesday the SABC said in a statement that production would resume on Thursday after reaching an agreement with 7de Laan bosses.

“The SABC has been in contact with the producers of 7de Laan and both parties have reached an agreement for the continuation of the production,” reads the statement.

“Both parties will continue to engage to ensure a successful delivery of the show until its termination date scheduled at the end of December.”

7de Laan has had viewers glued to the screens for the past 23 years and fans are distraught that production had been stopped.

They have since started a petition that has garnered the support of many viewers.

Zooming in on the lives of those who stay in and around the community of 7de Laan in Hillside, a suburb, the soapie introduced much-loved characters.

These include Oubaas, Hilda, Charmaine, Aggie, Emma, and the Meintjies family who became household names.

Originally presented in Afrikaans only, 7de Laan has gone through many transformations reflective of a changing society through the introduction of various dynamic characters, storylines and languages from other races and cultures reflecting South Africa’s diversity.
