I am a scholar of Hip Hop and Rap, says Okmalumkoolkat

Simiso Zwane, commonly known by his stage name Okmalumkoolkat, has taken to social media to share a screenshot from a fan asking why he did not make the cut for a certain list.

The fan, who was interacting with another, said Okmalumkoolkat had the flow and bars. They praised the rapper for being cool and defining the hip-hop culture.

Okmalumkoolkat explained that he had never cared about being in certain top lists but he thought he now understood why certain people got on these specific lists and why some did not.

“I am a scholar of Hip Hop and Rap, and from what I understand about rhythm and poetry, the main thing is originality and reliability. I cover both by miles compared to my peers.

He further asked his fans what made a dope lyricist in a South African context.

Rapper Priddy Ugly responded to the Umlazi-born star and said he was one of the greatest to have ever touched the mic.

“Personally, I don’t think it matters, it is all subjective and lists are about personal preference, however, you are one of the greatest to have ever touched the mic,” wrote Priddy Ugly.

In May he cancelled all his shows and said he would not be honouring invitations to parties following the death of his father.

He said his father never played an active role in his upbringing, and he died three weeks before the muso released a new album.

Okmalumkookat said he has since made peace with the absence of his late father and has forgiven him.
