I was scared when vagrants tied me up in my home – Dineo Ranaka

Dineo Ranaka, a DJ and radio host on Metro FM, has finally shared the reasons behind her departure from the Gauteng commercial radio station Kaya 959.

Ranaka claimed that some of her co-workers had a narcissistic energy and a certain amount of arrogance.

“That narcissistic aura comes with a level of arrogance. There’s a culture there that has been left to brew and ferment too long that people walk around the walls in that building with the sense of ‘you need my teachings’; I actually do not, not from you,” she said.

Speaking candidly about these incidents on the Relebogile Mabotja podcast, Ranaka also disclosed that she has learnt a lot from the industry.

“I come with skills, and I do not need to prove myself to you; you are not my cheque signer. Through my lens, I am your equal; in actual fact, I am your senior, given the flagship of the show,” she said.

System is so empathy deprived

She acknowledged, when asked if the narcissistic energy originated from management or a coworker, stating that is when she realised she was being treated disrespectfully.

“You speak to your management, and you are like: ‘I am not feeling okay; there is something wrong with me. I can still go another day, but I am not feeling okay’.

“The system itself is so empathy deprived. That’s when I knew. I was like: ‘No, this environment perpetuates this ego, this narcissistic energy that feels the need to control and correct. Who hired you to correct me? Which part of the HR department do you serve’?

The reality TV star also discussed her robbery experience, saying that after breaking into her Johannesburg home, unknown men tied her up on her bed.

“I was tied up at about 3am in my house. When this guy mounted me, understand the fear that is in my heart; my helper is across the room from me, and she is also tied up; my children are just down the passage; it was scary,” she said.

Need to protect the children

Ranaka said when she saw one of the men climbing the bed, she could see a violent sexual act transpiring.

“When things fall apart, I am very calm; I am very cool. When I was tied up, this guy was mounting my bed, this phara [vagrant],” she chuckled.

“And I am seeing this, and I am like: ‘God, I do not know what is going to happen, but right now I need to protect my children.

“So I dare to open my mouth, and I say: ‘Look, with whatever you are planning to do, please do not take the children’s tablets so that when they wake up, they do not see that we have been robbed again.

“I am like: ‘I don’t have the money to buy them new tablets. Please help me protect my children; you can take whatever you want.’”

She said one of the men turned her over and tied her up without responding.

“Then he asked where the keys of the Discovery that was in the garage were. I responded by saying I do not know them; perhaps my husband took them and went to an event.

“Never let anyone know that you live alone; lie if you have to. I lived alone with my kids, but I said I am sure they are with my husband. When you are calm, you are able to use your brain.”
