Sdumo Mtshali is a gem to work with, shares Nelisa Mchunu

Working with Sdumo Mtshali has been amazing because of his talent and professionalism, according to actress Nelisa Mchunu.

Mchunu, who portrays the character of Khathazile in Mzansi Magic’s soap opera My Brother’s Keeper, told Sunday World this week that Mtshali is a gem to work with.

Mtshali is Mchunu’s on-screen husband. She said Mtshali allows for both of them to react and bounce things off each other.

“We like to workshop our scenes together, which gives more life to their story. The things that people see on the small screen that make them laugh also make us laugh on set,” she said.

“He has been in the industry for so long that he knows what he is doing, which is amazing for me because I get to see and learn from that as well.”

Least dramatic character

Mchunu said playing Khathazile has been both interesting and fun, adding that the character is the least dramatic she has ever played since she started her career.

“It has been interesting playing a traditional wife, and I have had to draw inspiration from people around me that are in a similar situation in their lives.

“In the beginning of the show, Raphael Griffiths, who plays my son on the show, is almost the same age, and I was really worried that it would be awkward on television, but the make-up and wardrobe really did their thing.”

The actress said her character has taught her the importance of good communication and having each other’s backs as romantic partners.

“Khathazile is definitely different from all the characters that I have played before because I have played a crazy slay queen and a psychopathic killer.

“I like not being the crazy person for a change and I think I might just be ready to be a mother to three kids in my real life,” she said.

Comeback after brief disappearance

Regarding her comeback on TV after disappearing for a while, Mchunu said viewers can expect Khathazile to work things out with her husband again and make their bond stronger.

“Things are going to happen for Khathazile — good things in her own capacity, in the marriage and family. There will also be a major rollercoaster that she will go through.

“I have been off screen for a while and my fans will find out soon enough the real reason I was away.”

June is Youth Month and Mchunu said she loves seeing young people taking up space on the small screen.

“It also helps keep actors on their toes because you are never going to be relaxed because there is always someone new.

“It is nice to be kept on your toes because I have started watching locally produced shows more and I love seeing so many new, talented people on our screens.”
