State asked to honour doyens Motsuenyane and Thobela

A series of events have been planned to honour the memory and legacy of departed doyen of black business Dr Sam Motsuenyane this coming week.

The events include prayer meetings at his home in Winterveldt, north of Pretoria, a memorial service on Tuesday at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

Dr Motsuenyane, who founded the National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (Nafcoc) and African Bank during the dark days of apartheid, passed away from illness on Monday, 29 April. He was 97.

Dr Motsuenyane will be laid to rest in Pretoria on Thursday following a funeral service at the Akasia Community Hall.

In his tribute, President Cyril Ramaphosa said his passing “60 years after the establishment of Nafcoc is a profound reminder of the breadth, durability and longevity of his vision and passion for self-reliance and development”.

Ntlotleng Manale, spokesperson for the Dr Sam Motsuenyane Foundation, said the family had been in talks with government representatives over plans to honour the late pioneer with a special provincial funeral. Manale said they were awaiting feedback on the matter.

Meanwhile, Gauteng premier Panyaza Lesufi has written to Ramaphosa and asked him to allow him to honour Dingaan “The Rose of Soweto” Thobela with a special provincial funeral.

Thobela, 57, was found dead at his apartment in Mayfair, Joburg, by his girlfriend. He had complained of severe flu symptoms. Thobela had been living there alone after divorcing his wife Sandra Viera a few years ago.

A family member, who did not want to be named, said Lesufi informed them that he had asked Ramaphosa to designate the fallen pugilist’s funeral as a special provincial funeral in honour and recognition of contributing to uniting South Africans of all races through boxing. “The premier said Thobela’s legacy embodies the spirit of perseverance and excellence. Beyond his prowess in the ring, Thobela was a symbol of unity and pride for South Africa. He said Thobela brought communities together, bridging divides with his electrifying performances and unwavering commitment to his craft,” said the family member.

The next of kin also said Thobela’s memorial service would be held in Joburg on Wednesday and the funeral service on Thursday.

He will be laid to rest at Westpark cemetery’s heroes acre.
