Tyla and Makhadzi bring home three BET awards

Grammy winner Tyla Laura Seethal, who won two BET awards at this year’s ceremony in Los Angeles, is raising the standard for South Africa even higher.

Tyla, who was nominated in four categories, won the Best New Artist and Best International Act awards.

Meanwhile, Limpopo-born singer Ndivhunzannyi Ralivhona, popularly known by her stage name Makhadzi, also bagged the Best New International Act award.

Makhadzi expressed her happiness during her acceptance speech, citing her recent success as an international award winner as well as the fact that she began selling music on the streets.

“All I can say is that it is possible for a black child to make it, and this is the best birthday gift ever,” said Makhadzi.

Unearthing more super stars

Gayton McKenzie, the newly appointed Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, congratulated both Tyla and Makhadzi.

“We want to assure South Africans that we will not be a ministry that is content with congratulating artists and creatives only but will go out and unearth more Tylas and Makhadzis; help us find more future super stars,” wrote McKenzie.

In an interview with Sunday World recently, Makhadzi said that she believed she deserved everything good in the world at the right time.

The Ghanaian hitmaker said she was born a winner but did not know the exact time she would be in her winning era.

“The nomination is a shock, and I know I deserve the best because I am a hard worker. I go all out when it comes to music and performances,” she said at the time.

“I know what I deserve, but I believe in God’s timing. Now that the time has come, I am grateful for the blessings that come with the hard work.”

Consistency and relevance

She stated that she believed the nomination would push her more into making music, saying she planned to make people feel like she was a newcomer every year.

“I believe in consistency and relevance, and I always make sure to shine,” said the Mapara star.

“People are not ready for me this time around, and one thing I’m praying for is to perform at the BET Awards one day.

“Winning this award would be the medicine that will heal my wounds from the past in my musical journey. People know I have been through a lot but I chose to look forward.”
