Thembisile Nkadimeng, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), will on Saturday graduate with a master’s degree in public administration and management from University of Limpopo’s Turfloop Graduate School of Leadership.
Nkadimeng, who is also a former mayor of Polokwane local municipality, is a University of Limpopo alumni and holds a Bachelor of Arts, Higher Education Diploma, and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours).
The 50-year-old’s dissertation: Remedial factors that affect the promotion of good governance in a dysfunctional municipality: the case of Madibeng local municipality in North West Province, South Africa, provides a roadmap to improve service delivery in struggling municipalities and unlock viable economic opportunities.
Professor Sipho Mokoena, graduate school director and Nkadimeng’s academic supervisor, said the university and the country will benefit from the study, as it contributes to existing knowledge within the public sector.
“Our duty as a public institution is to train future leaders and nurture innovative ideas and approaches that seek to propel the development of our nation,” said Mokoena.
“We are exceptionally elated to be contributing towards the empowerment of our public representatives, who undoubtedly contribute towards the improvement of service delivery in the country.”
The university will, on the same day, also confer numerous postgraduate qualifications including 469 honours, 178 masters and 32 doctoral degrees to close off the autumn graduation period.
Victor Kgomoeswana, executive director for marketing and communication at the university, said the institution is guided by its motto to find solutions for Africa.
“The university remains steadfast in its quest to bring about positive change with economic spin-offs for the African continent, and will continue to contribute to efforts that address development and sustainable economic activity in South Africa and beyond”, said Kgomoeswana.
