Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane led the 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination pledge signing ceremony on Monday.
The ceremony took place at Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School in Johannesburg. The 2023 NSC examination is set to begin on October 30 and end on December 3.
Qualifying candidates are required to sign a pledge as an indication of their commitment and compliance to the NSC examination code of conduct.
State of readiness
During a media briefing, Chiloane also touched on the province’s state of readiness for the exams and gave an update on the 2024 online admissions for grade 1 and 8.
The department gave a stern warning to NSC candidates and urged them to avoid being disruptive during the exams.
This, said the department, will result in immediate removal from the examination centre and a ban from continuing with the exams.
“Candidates are reminded that if found guilty of any act of dishonesty, they will not only have their results nullified, but they will be barred from the stipulated number of future examination cycles depending on the severity of their dishonesty,” the department said.
“Candidates need to accept the dire consequences of their dishonesty and understand how it impacts on them being able to complete the NSC qualification.”
Fake documents, wrist watches
It confirmed that there are 191 181 candidates who will sit for the NSC examinations at 1 015 exam centres.
The department has trained invigilators to flag fake identity documents and candidates are not allowed to wear wrist watches.
It also announced the use of super scanners at examination centres to mitigate the smuggling of cellphones, adding that additional chief invigilators and monitors will be stationed at high-risk centres.
Speaking on the online registrations, the department has accounted for the placement of 273 186 learners who have provided complete application forms.
Furthermore, it said 32 795 applicants with incomplete applications will be placed after all applicants with complete applications have been accommodated.
It added that parents who submitted documents manually and have proof that documents were submitted will be assisted to update their applications.
