Mohale has big shoes to fill as new education MEC in Free State

Makalo Mohale is the new MEC for education in Free State, the provincial department of education said on Wednesday.

Mohale replaces Tate Makgoe who died in a car crash over a week ago. Makgoe, who made huge strides in the province’s education system, was buried on Sunday.

Free State premier Mxolisi Dukwana announced Mohale’s appointment during a cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday.

Mohale previously served as MEC for economic, small business development, tourism and environment affairs.

Head of department Tsoarelo Malakoane welcomed the appointment of the new MEC.

“From time to time and even during the Covid-19 hard lockdown, MEC Makalo has been acting as education MEC,” said Malakoane.

“He is therefore familiar with the challenges and interventions we have been implementing in providing quality education to all the learners in the province.”

He said the department has no doubt that Mohale will continue the legacy of Makgoe in strengthening the stakeholder-driven approach to address complex challenges of the sector and to acknowledge that education is a societal issue.

Mohale, who grew up in Botshabelo, Bloemfontein holds an LLB degree from Unisa and a Bcom degree from the University of the Free State.

He also holds three post-graduate diplomas in various legal fields from the University of Johannesburg.
