SoS pupils at Mohloli all pass new maritime economics course

The first inland school to offer maritime studies, Mohloli Maths, Science and ICT School of
Specialisation (SoS), has marked another milestone with the first group of matriculants to write maritime economics all passing the subject.

The school, based in Sharpeville in the Vaal, recorded a 100% pass rate for maritime economics.

Gomolemo Rampa passed the subject with distinction. “All 42 learners who wrote the maritime economics exam passed,” said acting principal Mohlodi Makua.

Mohloli was launched as an SoS with the focus on maritime studies due to its location near the VaalRiver in February 2019. In 2020, the school introduced maritime economics with the first intake being a group of grade 10 pupils.

The school is among the eight of 20 schools of specialisation that have achieved an overall pass rate of over 90%.

“We achieved a 93.8% pass and 51 distinctions,” said Makua, adding that out of 210 pupils who sat
for the exams, 114 achieved a bachelor’s pass, 64 a diploma pass and 19 a higher certificate pass.

Makua said out of the 13 pupils who did not make it, seven did not write all the subjects.
Kgontse Motlhabe is the top pupil at the school with a total of six distinctions, missing out on a full house with her Sesotho mark. Bohang Moremi and Lesego Seabo achieved four distinctions each.

The school is looking forward to another milestone this year as five of its pupils who are in grade 12 will be writing marine science for the first time in matric. This group is registered for eight subjects.

In a partnership with Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation, the school introduced marine science in 2020, with the five pupils in grade 10 studying the course online in a pilot programme.

This year, marine science is offered in-house as a subject from grade 10. The Gauteng provincial government launched the first school, the Curtis Nkondo School of Specialisation – which focuses on engineering, maths and science, ICT and commerce and entrepreneurship – in 2016 in Emndeni, Soweto.

The schools provide a skills-based curriculum to meet the needs of Gauteng’s five economic corridors by offering a combination of theory and practical work in engineering, maths, science and ICT; commerce and entrepreneurship; sports; and performing and creative arts.

The Gauteng department of education plans to transform an additional 14 schools in the province into schools of specialisation by the end of the first quarter of next year.
