Clerah Lerato Sethole’s heart is as precious as her self-funded non-profit organisation (NPO) Precious Hope Foundation. Founded in 2019 in Mohlakeng township, west of Johannesburg, where Sethole lives, the NPO is a learner support organisation that helps local pupils navigate through schooling even long after matric. “The work I do creates role models who want to create a safe environment for community members, an environment that takes career guidance and life skills to heart,” says 27-year-old Sethole who is unemployed. The NPO provides peer education to Grades 8 to 10, including assisting Grade 9s to choose subjects they will learn in Grade 10. It also offers learner education to Grades 9 to 12. Once learners reach Grades 10 and 11, career guidance is intensified through the introduction of different career fields, mainly relating to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and the digital revolution. In Grade 12, the NPO invites many educational institutions to enlighten pupils about various career choices at their disposal. The organisation hosts business classes for learners interested in running their own enterprises. Importantly, it organises career exhibitions for matriculants, out-of-school youths and jobseekers. Such exhibitions have helped some Grade 12 pupils apply for learnerships, internships, tertiary education, bursaries, employment, and registering their own businesses. Sethole, who leads a team of four partners, has a book club and offers homework assistance for primary school-going children
