Khoza, 30, from Zebediela village, Limpopo, is a teacher of teachers in science. In 2010, he registered for a Bachelor of Education degree at Wits University and after graduating in 2013, he enrolled for an honours degree in 2014. In 2015 he added a Masters of Science in Education and a PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) degree in 2017, which he completed in 2020. Since 2019, Khoza has been a lecturer at the University of Pretoria, responsible for teaching science education and supervising honours, masters and PhD students. “I teach for relevance to develop an individual to also develop others,” he says. “I want to develop young science education researchers through postgraduate supervision, especially the previously disadvantaged group.” Khoza previously supervised nine interns at the Leap Science and Math School, seven of whom are working as teachers today. “I also want to be a responsible citizen, academically speaking, by making sure that what I research informs my practice, for example, how I teach and train science teachers,” he adds. He has designed curriculum and material for grade 6 and 7 learners from Alexandra township, north of Johannesburg. Additionally, he has won a teaching and learning award during the Covid-19 at the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Education. Khoza has attended several national and international conferences and has published five articles in accredited peer reviewed journals. Next year he plans to register for a master’s degree in leadership in higher education. His wish is to be a renowned professor at one of the leading universities in the continent.
