Dube, 30, from Cato Manor, KwaZulu-Natal, landed in the tourism industry by accident, twice. He was short of one course to complete a list of seven subjects required for Grade 11 and he chose tourism not knowing that he would fall in love with it. He enrolled for a one-year tourism certificate from the Durban Central Technical College in 2011, and, while studying, he discovered the rich history and culture of Cato Manor (Umkhumbane). He learnt of how residents (shack dwellers) started brewing beer to make a living that led to the institution of the Native Beer Act of 1908 to shut the “illegal” operation down, culminating to riots where nine members of the police force were brutally killed through stoning or disembowelment. “Cato Manor is ranked with Sophiatown and District 6 but our area is silent and not well-marketed. I believe that through tourism we can make this community famous,” says Dube. Dube registered Loxtion Tours in 2017 and the company specialises in booking accommodation, car hire, shuttle service and cultural and historical tours in and around Durban for local and international tourists. It offers three tour packages, namely the Giba Gorge Adventure, Inanda Heritage Route and Umkhumbane Heritage tours. The company is a member of the Durban West Community Tourism Organisation, of which Dube serves as its Acting Deputy Chairperson. Loxtion Tours has serviced more than 500 clients since its inception and works hand in hand with eThekwini Municipality, Tourism KwaZulu-Natal, Durban Africa and many other tourism bodies in KwaZulu-Natal. “I am an ambassador of Cato Manor. It is the untold rich history of this community that I want to share with the rest of the world,” says Dube.
