Keamogetse Tisane, 23, is an exemplary academic and doctor in the making passionate about inspiring the next generation of scholars. Tisane, who grew up in Ga-Rankuwa Zone 4, holds a BSc degree in life sciences and an honours degree in anatomy from Sefako Makgatho Health Science University, where she works part-time as a junior lecturer and table doctor. She’s also busy with her MSc in anatomy. Despite the pressures of work and study, Tisane still finds time to help high school learners apply to different tertiary institutions, providing advice on courses offered at different universities, and career routes to explore as well as funding opportunities. She wishes to see more young people entering careers in science, a field that is helpful to humanity. “Scientists work hard to find new methods that will assist with issues such as finding cures and medication for certain diseases, methods that improve crop production, which can create jobs in agriculture, and tackle unemployment and food insecurity, as well as innovations to tackle global warming.” She also advocates for careers in the technology and finance sectors. Her personal background informs her passion for helping others. “Growing up an orphan was not always easy, especially since I had a younger sibling and younger cousins who looked up to me. So, I used that opportunity to inspire those who came after me. I wanted them to know they could accomplish anything no matter their situation,” says Tisane. What does she hope to achieve next? “I hope to inspire young people to take their academic work seriously and help them achieve their goals of determining what they want to become as they grow up,” says Tisane. She has lofty professional dreams. “I want to be part of a team that will discover something great in research that will impact people’s lives and interest people in science.”
