Keketso Reneta Mokgothu, who hails from the humble town of Odendaalsrus in the Free State, is determined to leave her mark in the food processing industry. Her new company, Mtswako, has produced honey and turmeric immune booster that will soon be available on the shelves of Roots butcheries nationwide. Witnessing the negative impact of Covid-19, with people losing their loved ones and jobs as the global economy faltered, inspired her to find a solution to the health challenges facing humanity. Incidentally, she is not even a chef! She concocted the recipe in her own kitchen. “I came up with a product that has health benefits which is safe for consumption and is made from natural ingredients,” she explains. After a rigorous process of product testing, shelf-life determination, nutritional information determination, product branding, and operations from the mini-plant, Mokgothu managed to produce Mtswako Honey and Turmeric Puree Booster. The product, which sells for R50 a bottle, was approved as healthy by MLS national laboratory and will be available at Roots from 9 May 2022. That’s true entrepreneurship.
