Mhlongo View, in Phola Park, east of Johannesburg, is an underdeveloped township that grapples with many social ills, such as teenage pregnancies and gender-based violence. After a thorough consultation, Mhlongo View Community Development co-founders, Bubele Tyhobeka, Monde Mzimkhulu, and Sityebi, convened a community meeting for young people to discuss burning issues within the community. His NPO which was established in 2020, mobilises the community, especially the youth, through workshops to address social ills in the area. He and his team have established under-13 and under-15 local soccer teams, a venture that has helped to keep the community together, and the youth from straying. Sityebi says they are in the process of organising a netball team as well. They work in collaboration with established organisations, including the Thokoza SAPS, social workers and the Phola Park Clinic. His NPO has also embarked on a drive to empower spaza shop owners by inviting business experts to impart business expertise such as bookkeeping and stock control. Sityebi is a former local primary school administrator. He has studied inventory/stock control management.
