It is no secret that 25-year-old Magauta Ntsoeu is eyeing the position of head of department: tourism and event management at Central University of Technology. She says she has even informed the incumbent, acting head of department Bianca de Klerk of her ambitions. Ntsoeu’s name is a familiar one at the institution’s campus in Bloemfontein. It is engraved for posterity on several trophies in recognition of her outstanding achievements as the top student in the department since 2016. “I consider myself a leader and I also want to produce leaders,” she says. She obtained her National Diploma in Tourism Management in 2019 and Advanced Diploma in Tourism Management last year, both cum laude. She has been a recipient of the vice-chancellor’s scholarship since 2017 and is completing her post-graduate diploma this year. She is also already working on her topic for her Master’s degree. As a student assistant at the university, Ntsoeu manages 100 supplemental instruction (SI) leaders who are assisting with 175 modules at the institution. SI leaders are students who are excelling in their subject field and are chosen to assist other students. An orphan raised by her aunt and husband, Ntsoeu has also excelled as an exchange student in the US for a 10-months programme at the College of DuPage in Chicago, Illinois where she completed two foundation certificates in her chosen field. “It is the last conversation I had with my mother that has been a great source of inspiration,” she says. “She had just bought me a new school uniform because we were moving from Welkom to Bothavile in 2006. I was so happy with my new uniform and excited about our relocation. My mother said I must hold on to education because I look happy in my school uniform.” “I see myself wearing a red gown to honour my mother,” she says.
