MMELI Ndimande (26) from Inanda Durban who believes that the involvement of youngsters in sports will contribute to their development as solid citizens. Ndimande, upon realising that the only popular sport in his hometown was soccer decided in 2018 to establish the Inanda Trail Running Club (ITRC). “After many years of being involved in sports, I realised there was a need for a sports club in our community,”says Ndimande. As a sportsman himself, who grew up doing sport which was Mountain Biking, Canoeing and Trail Running and realised the positive impact sport had on him, he knew there was no turning back. He argues that through sports young people, while striving to win, learn about teamwork, leadership, discipline, respect, confidence and sportsmanship. He has also created a team that has competed in events like the Dusi canoe marathon, athletic competitions and trail runs with both girls and boys. ITRC do not only limit itself to participating in sporting activities. Their off the pitch activities include being assisted with their school work, being helped with stationery, school uniforms and monthly food parcels organised by the Club through donations. Out of 20 events done by the ITRC they managed to get over 60 podium- finishes and have so far 50 members.
