The countless possibilities of social media have taken Zanele Cekiso from an HIV activist and registered nurse at work to an online sensation. The holder of a Postgraduate Diploma in HIV Management from Stellenbosch University has built an online presence that surpasses her education and seven-year experience in the HIV sector. Currently a quality assurance coordinator for Strategic, Evaluation, Advisory and Development (SEAD) Consulting, Cekiso’s main duties include providing expert advice to the Wits RHI NGO in the Ekurhuleni District on quality in HIV testing. With a Facebook and Twitter following of 2 900 and 4 500 respectively, Nurse Zee has really cemented herself in the hearts of her followers as The Nurse of the People. She is also the first YouTuber in Africa to document her life as a nurse. Her channel has 5550 subscribers. Nurse Zee serves the people beyond the borders of South Africa through her social media platforms, providing confidential psychosocial support to people living with HIV. She also makes educational YouTube videos teaching people about HIV prevention, management, and diagnosis.
