Tebogo Sharon van Rensburg is a civil engineer and candidate project manager. Van Rensburg initially wanted to pursue the arts, but her mother recognised her talent in maths and science, steering her towards engineering. This decision led her to the University of Johannesburg, where she earned the prestigious Deon Kruger Award for outstanding civil engineering students. Van Rensburg’s passion for civil engineering is driven by a desire to create positive change through infrastructure development. “The ability to design, construct, and maintain the structures that shape our communities has always captivated me,” she shares. Van Rensburg’s achievements include being named an Engineering Superhero by the Institution of Civil Engineers in the United Kingdom and representing her university at the Global Engineering Congress. Recently, as a representative of the C40 Cities Youth Hub, she participated in the South African Cities Dialogue, discussing the role of local governments in fostering urban resilience and a just energy transition. Reflecting on South Africa's 30 years of democracy, Van Rensburg emphasises the progress in education, calling for more to be done. “The progress made in expanding access to education aligns with the broader goal of creating a more just and equitable society. However, the challenges that remain underscore the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure that all individuals have access to quality education.”
