Zizipho Nyulu is an aspiring young author, community leader and literacy advocate who is determined to make a difference in the lives of children through creative writing workshops and storytelling sessions. Nyulu became an author after she attended a Department of Education programme aimed at promoting children’s books. Through the assistance of the department, she later published her first book in isiXhosa. She was doing Grade 3 then. Many years later, after matriculating, Nyulu continues writing short stories for children, to promote isiXhosa. She has also worked on numerous projects, such as the Central Book Festival. Nyulu’s recent book was launched at the Reading Club Festival held in East London. For Nyulu it is very important to give back to the community in any possible way, as it can inspire change and make a difference. She dedicates her time to helping children with homework as well as reading. Importantly, she focuses on children living with disabilities, ensuring that they too have access to opportunities. Reflecting on our democracy, Nyulu says: “I wouldn’t say there are developments if we still have a child that goes to school to learn all the subjects in English only to fail afterwards because they don’t understand it.”
