Project Name/Description:
Kula Organic Farm
Nonkululeko “Nonku” Britton is a woman of many talents. In addition to being a consummate storyteller, with a wealth of media experience, she is fast making a name for herself as an agri-preneur. Britton, who still keeps her day job as a user experience designer at Standard Bank in Johannesburg, started Kula Organic Farm in 2017 when she turned her parents’ smallholder plot in Midrand into a profitable farm. She partnered with other food gardens within a 20km radius and managed to put together weekly combinations of vegetables that she would deliver to customers’ homes or offices. During pre-Covid days, Britton was also a regular at the Rosebank and Sandton markets in Johannesburg, where her organic veggies were a hit with customers. A huge selling point of her agri-business is a stress for consumers to be always conscious about what they eat, and this starts with knowing how the food was grown, hence Britton’s emphasis on organic farming and use of indigenous farming methods. Today, the business sells wholesome, organic products such as raw honey, Canna Tea and African Wormwood oil. Britton also helps others to start their own veggie gardens so they, too, could plant food and herbs in an organic way.
