According Lefentje Mampuru tourism found her and she regards it more of a calling than a vocation. “I had no plans or vision on how to run a guest house, or even working in the tourism and hospitality industry,” she says. But today Mampuru is the managing director of two guest houses which are both family businesses, including Mohlaletse Guest House. Mampuru says tourism has a pivotal role to play in achieving the objectives at the heart of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in particular the commitments to gender equality and empowerment of women for sustainable development. Most people employed in the tourism industry worldwide are women, both in formal and informal jobs. Tourism offers women opportunities for income-generation and entrepreneurship. Mampuru has been elected as the secretary of Limpopo Women In Tourism, as well as chairperson of the same entity at district level. She is also the founder of an non-profit organisation called Woman Of Significance which focuses on rural development programmes and of hosting entrepreneurial events to empower females and youth.
