Project Name/Description:
RBKM chickens
AFTER working for 12 years as a microbiologist with no prospect of promotion, Thulisile Mokwena decided to try her hand in poultry farming. In 2019, she started a company and named it RBKM Chickens. The name may sound foreign, but the consonants represent the names of her three children. Today, she boasts six chicken houses, each accommodating between 100 and 200 broilers. Last September, she built another house to accommodate a whopping 2 500 chicks. Her late grandfather was a farmer, and by then she had no interest at all in the business. It was her late parents who forced her to visit her grandpa on weekends during school vacations — something she hated. “Little did I know that one day I would be a farmer,” says Mokwena. RBKM is a broiler production entity. It engages in raising, processing and marketing broilers. She packages and sells them to buyers — both in bulk and individuals. The company produces an estimated 3 700 broilers per cycle. “What makes us unique is that we sell chicken loved and preferred by most people. This is because they are affordable and are delivered at the customers’ doorstep.”
