Hailing from Lebowakgomo Zone B in Polokwane, Limpopo, Itumeleng Chidi is synonymous with academic excellence. As a sociology lecturer at the University of Limpopo (UL), her journey exemplifies dedication and a thirst for knowledge.
Chidi has a remarkable educational background that has culminated in a PhD pursuit. She has acquired accolades such as the Sunday World Unsung Heroes and the University of Limpopo Vice-Chancellor’s Teaching and Learning Award. Chidi is also recognised as the Best Female Community Engagement Scholar at the UL.
Beyond personal achievements, Chidi is committed to empowering women in academia. “We have few women in management and leadership positions,” she notes. This observation underscores the importance of gender diversity in leadership roles.
Chidi chairs the University of Limpopo Women’s Academic Solidarity Association, a platform that hosts workshops, seminars and motivational sessions. These forums offer invaluable guidance to upcoming women researchers, fostering a supportive community. She also introduced writing retreats, enabling women to focus on their studies in a conducive environment.
“Serving this organisation for more than five years has helped me grow in terms of project management, leadership styles, communication strategies, problem solving as well as event management,” she says.
Additionally, Chidi’s visionary programme - Shadowing of Management Positions - exposes aspiring women leaders to real-world leadership challenges. Her efforts strive to dismantle barriers and create a more inclusive academic environment.
