Richmond in Northern Cape hardly makes the news. The central Karoo dorpie’s biggest claim to fame is that it is regarded to be the halfway point between Johannesburg and Cape Town, down the N1 highway. It is generally a peaceful town with bookshops, intriguing street art and buildings with architecture that harks back to old times.
Unfortunately, even in such pleasant locations, women can’t escape being killed by their lovers. Geraldine Frazenberg, 39, was found butchered and shoved into a hole in the veld outside town. Her lover, 48-year-old Franklin Mias had arrived home with bloodstained clothes. He washed some and burned the rest.
After his arrest, Mias directed police to a hole where he had buried Frazenberg. On Wednesday, he appeared in the Richmond district court for the murder of his girlfriend. His bail application was turned down and the case postponed to January 16.
You’re not guilty yet, via the South African justice system. However, spending Christmas behind bars should give you a chance to reflect and decide not to waste the court’s time next year. Confess your sins moegoe, and afford Frazenberg’s family a chance to mourn their daughter and sister.
