Samas, ivale mfana ayisafani

Samas, ivale mfana ayisafani

If it looks low budget and a last-minute arrangement, it probably is, and that was the story of the SA Music Awards (Samas) event last weekend at the Sunbet Arena in the country’s capital.

Shwa understands, the reversal of the R28-million commitment by the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government left a big hole. Why are Samas still heavily reliant on government handouts after so many years in existence? Shwa has a suggestion for the organisers: close shop because the event is obviously based on a flawed and unsustainable business model.

Shwa is not going into the old debate about controversial selection of winners that has dealt the annual event a blow over the years. This is the reason why what is supposed to be the biggest celebration of our musicians has lost all credibility and this edition was further evidence that just maybe it is time to bring down the curtain on Samas as we know them and start afresh.

We understand the inconvenience that came with the change of venue from Durban to Pretoria, but did they really have to go ahead bathong. It was just a sham, and everything looked like a start-up village event that does not know whether it is coming or going.
