How to keep fit in this cold

Johannesburg – I don’t like exercising whatever time of the year it is and I guess many fitness goers also find it hard to be enthusiastic while the temperatures drop, but according to Themba Ndlovu from Clere for Men Active, exercise can help get rid of winter blues, winter weight gain and boost your energy.

Tips to motivate yourself to stay active this winter:

  • Join a small group of joggers, that way you won’t make excuses as you have people to be accountable to, and don’t forget the pleasures of Instagram or Zoom where you can join a Live class and not have to brave the chill.
  • Consider how beneficial exercise is for your mental health and stay exercising, this is a time to try exercises you can do while you isolate, like yoga. It’s crucial to remember that mental health benefits happen almost immediately and when you are active you feel better and more relaxed.
  • Definitely plan ahead and consider the weather so you have no excuses but to grab your gear in the morning without running around looking for jerseys or leg warmers.
  • Another great cardio option is swimming, so do consider that a warm indoor pool can be the perfect place for a workout when the weather is grim outside.
  • Protect your skin from the elements with a rich moisturising body cream to keep your skin from drying out and drink plenty of water.
  • Block out those icy and biting winds, consider keeping your face covered with a proper mask or scarf.
  • Moisturise and keep a rich moisturiser in your gym bag, don’t forget the lips, heels and body because they are mostly exposed to the elements.
  • I would also like to add that a bright coloured outfit will also motivate you to show it off at the gym.
  • Your stairs at home are another form of exercise if you are too lazy to go to gym
  • A skipping rope is not confined to location, so skin in your lounge and record it for Tik Tok
  • Record yourself training at home as it also makes great content you can share to inspire others at home
  • Get off that couch and get exercising as you have no reason for that extra insulation.
  • Run on the Spot if you must.
