1,914 MTN subscriber accounts compromised by cybercriminals

Johannesburg – A criminal syndicate has been uncovered by telecommunications giant, MTN South Africa, defrauding the company and its clients.

The internal forensic investigation was conducted by MTN in conjunction with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Mybroadband reported.

Jacqui O’Sullivan, MTN SA’s executive for corporate affairs told  MyBroadband that MTN has gained extensive insights into the modus operandi of the syndicate.


“While the investigation remains ongoing, the collaboration has amassed a vital body of evidence against the perpetrators of the fraud,” she said.

The investigation has uncovered 1,914 MTN subscriber accounts compromised by the cybercriminals.

MTN said it continues to scan customer accounts to identify irregularities and unauthorised activity.
