A lesson in political folly: ANCYL left head-scratching in shame

The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) members in Ekurhuleni found themselves in sixes and sevens when they marched to a police station to open a case against a local EFF leader – without bringing any supporting evidence.

The young lions were on Wednesday left with head-scratching moments following their long walk to the Kempton Park police station to press charges against Ekurhuleni MMC for finance and EFF provincial chairperson Nkululeko Dunga.

The campaign to put the EFF on the back foot only demonstrated a startling lack of comprehension and coordination, turning out to be an ill-conceived endeavor.

Last Monday, Dunga sparked controversy over a potential conflict of interest when he got involved in a car accident while traveling in a privately owned V-Class Mercedes-Benz belonging to a certain businessman and tenderpreneur.

A person killed in an accident

The accident occurred on the R21 highway just before the Pomona off-ramp in Ekurhuleni, leaving one person dead and several injured.

The ANC alleged then that the vehicle was clad in blue lights.

Back in Kempton Park, all the ANCYL members had to do was submit to the police a picture substantiating their claim, but they failed.

The young lions, supposedly on a mission to expose wrongdoing, spent hours waiting for someone high up in the ranks who had sent them to share evidence they had not even seen themselves.

Foolish political stunt

One was heard saying: “This clearly shows that we are not used to such. We did not know we had to bring the picture; do they not have it?”

Another person searching for evidence on X, formerly Twitter, said: “All of a sudden everyone is using the same picture with no blue lights; maybe it was removed.”

The amusing turn of events revealed the marching group’s disarray and raised the question of whether they were genuinely committed to their cause or merely involved in a foolish political stunt.

While the use of a luxury vehicle with blue lights by a public official certainly raises eyebrows, the ANCYL’s response to this situation exemplifies political folly that serves to distract from the core issues at hand.

Their ill-prepared attempt to hold Dunga accountable undermined any legitimate concerns regarding the said accident.

But in the world of politics, one would reasonably assume that optics and substance are intertwined. In the youth league’s case, it was the opposite.
