Accident involving Greyhound bus and VW Polo claims five lives

Police in Free State are investigating a case of culpable homicide after an accident on the N6 and R702 Road claimed the lives of five people.

The crash took place between a Greyhound luxury coach and a VW Polo hatchback early on Sunday morning.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thabo Covane said the officers were called to the scene of the accident after midnight.

“The bus, which was traveling in the southern direction towards Reddersburg, reportedly ran over the Polo, which was travelling from the eastern direction to the west,” he said.

Covane said it appeared the Polo failed to come to a halt at the stop sign.

“The Polo then rolled, resulting in three of its occupants being ejected while the driver and the other passenger remained trapped inside.

“The emergency services personnel were summoned to the scene and the five occupants in the Volkswagen Polo were declared dead. The bus driver was rushed to the hospital.”

Police said an initial investigation has revealed that the VW Polo is still registered as We Buy Cars property.

A case of culpable homicide was opened at Kagisanong police station and an investigation continues.

Police are also pleading with members of the public to come forward and identify the deceased, who have been described as young people.

In April, five people tragically lost their lives in a horrific bus accident on the N2 near Swellendam in Western Cape.

According to a statement issued by the provincial government at the time, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle and it overturned leaving 48 people with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

In July, multiple injuries were reported following a morning rush-hour collision between two buses near the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Kingsway campus.

The accident, which involved a Metrobus and a UJ shuttle bus, left more than 70 people injured, with five of them critical.

It was reported at the time that one of the buses overturned while the other hit a concrete barrier.
